Ether has been used as a starting aid for decades. It is not a replacement for a block heater but may supplement a block heater on a really cold day. If the engine is in good shape and designed for ether, a small shot to assist in starting will not hurt anything. If ether was as bad as some would have you believe, it wouldn't come as factory equipment and would void thousands of warranties. The problem is not with the ether but the people using it that don't have a clue how to use it properly. Ether in large doses will kill an engine or cause it to become addicted.
