anyone know how to use (properly) the ether kit on a old 4020?? do you just spray it up in the thing while you crank the motor over, or do you spray it in the little cup then screw the cup back on before you start cranking the motor????steve cline 210 6741111 thanks, steve

if your talking the ether kit that has a line running to the intake manifold, you unscrew the cap and remove the little button from the top of the can and press the little nub on the can up into the ether assist while cranking

Take the nozzle off the can and jamb the can up in the fitting. Pressure from the can pushes the ether to the intake. I like to get the engine rolling over when I hit it with the ether. If your ether can has a necked down "spout" it won't work. The fitting needs the full diameter.

If it's like mine, a black adapter on the dash, remove the cap on the adapter and the button on the ether. Start cranking the engine, insert the ether tube into the adapter and give it a squirt. Don't hold it there too long- just a squirt. Then put the cap back on everything. I have found over the years, a block heater works better and the engine will last longer....

Is it just me or has anyone else found that diesels become "addicted" to ether? I think that the more you use it on an engine, the more it won't start without it. I try not to use it and when I do I use it sparingly.

I never liked that system. When we have to use ether we spray a good shot on the screen under the air cleaners precleaner on top the hood. That way it is turning over good before the ether is drawn into the intake, much less rattling and banging.None if done right. We have one 3020 with 9500 hours that we use alot of ether on as the engine is wore out.Someday we will overhaul it then no more ether.A block heater is better but sometimes that is not an option.

Ether has been used as a starting aid for decades.
It is not a replacement for a block heater but may
supplement a block heater on a really cold day. If
the engine is in good shape and designed for
ether, a small shot to assist in starting will not
hurt anything. If ether was as bad as some would
have you believe, it wouldn't come as factory
equipment and would void thousands of warranties.
The problem is not with the ether but the people
using it that don't have a clue how to use it
properly. Ether in large doses will kill an engine
or cause it to become addicted.

The proper starting aid is winter oil, front pump destroker, good batteries, good cables and a block coolant heater.
Ether is for emergency use in life and death situations. Forget about the stuff.
