If you look at pictures of B-17s flying in formation during WW2 you will frequently see contrails too. The swirling air at the tips of the wings can create contrails.
About seeding clouds, when done successfully it does increase rainfall, but at the expense of where that moisture would have fallen instead. Robbing Peter to pay Paul.
