Coud seeding?

When I was a kid, you know Rin Tin Tin, Sky King and the Lone Ranger, they talked alot about seeding the clouds to get rain. What ever happened to all that?

If you ever look up in the sky and notice all those funny looking vapor trails that come from those high flying jets, that instead of disappearing like a normal contrail does, spreads out in a wide gray cloud and pretty soon what should be a bright sunny day, turns into a gray overcast one. That is what happened to cloud seeding, but now it is called 'weather modification' and the vapor trails are called -chemtrails, which consist of fine particles of barium and aluminum. Those are what is causing all the weird weather we have been having since the end of the ninetys. Just our military expermenting with the weather to see if it can be used to advantage in future high tech war.

In the late 60's Coors was getting into that. A friend got a job flying for them, and ask me but I didn't have enough twin time yet.

Clouds were seeded with silver iodide. Mixed results. Needed some clouds first- seeding moisture-less air brings nothing. Popular during some dry years in the 50s, 60s.

That is a complete load of horse hockey. I'm not saying the military hasn't dabbled in weather mod stuff but to think that they are flying over the continental US spraying us all is absurd.

Sometimes contrails dissipate quickly and sometimes they linger and spread out. You get enough aircraft over a certain route and sure, it can form a high thin overcast. It all depends on temperature, humidity, and winds aloft.

Now, is weather mod such as cloud seeding still going on? I personally am not sure. I'm not around that community as much anymore. I do know that the Univ. of N Dakota used to do that because a had a few friends that flew in that project.

No. Those are normal contrails from commercial jets. The military does inject materials into some jets exhaust for modifying heat signatures etc but they don't do it continuously, and not in public airspace.

The soot from normal jet exhaust does naturally seed clouds and cause disturbance to the weather by increasing cloud cover, but you have to have humidity to start with.

actually, yes its still going on. BUT theres a catch, cloud seeding does not "make" rain. It simply increases the amount of rain produced. in other words ,the conditions to produce rain have to haappen naturaly, then folks seed the cloud to increase the amount of rain in a given area. One company in the texas panhandle for instance had data that reportedly proved they increased rainfall in the seeded area by two inches. Now for you sceptics, weve all seen it rain more on one place or another, so how much of this is a natural occurance and how much is due directly to the seeding efforts is a matter of interpetation. I personally ,would be willing to try it if it would make some rain!

If you look at pictures of B-17s flying in formation during WW2 you will frequently see contrails too. The swirling air at the tips of the wings can create contrails.

About seeding clouds, when done successfully it does increase rainfall, but at the expense of where that moisture would have fallen instead. Robbing Peter to pay Paul. If you were downstream from where the seeding was taking place you might get even less rain, making the drought even worse where you were.

I read an article once about a cloud seeding guy operating somewhere in Kansas who put silver XXX or something on thunderstorms to reduce the possibility of hail.

So here is this guy zipping in and out of this oncoming frontal system and WHAM!!!!! A piece of hail the size of a grapefruit smashes through his windscreen and hits him right in the mouth.

The article said he was able to make his way back home and I forgot the rest.

That had to be some kind of unexpected harrowing experience.
