Hay is about one of the worst things I have ever put on a step deck short of a load of new steel fence post. Takes too long to load , hard to tie down and too long to unload. That being said I think you are safe to think you can get 600 + bales moved 500 miles or so for your 1200 hundred figure. I would worry more about buying hay from someone I did not know or hay I had not looked at. Could get a load of 40 lb bales of weeds.
