From all the replies, looks like I'll be checking the air filter (not getting enough air would cause an running rich condition too). If that is not it, then I'll be adding some seafoam (keep a couple bottles on hand just for such emergencies as well as some 2-stroke oil). I'm certain that I put diesel in the diesel tractor. No, it doesn't have a choke.
If all that doesn't clear up the situation, I'll have a go at the exhaust (although I hardly think it is clogged since it produces so much black smoke!)... The only other possibility (that I can think of) is the fuel delivery... Thanks for all the replies (and for some of the chuckles too)...
