What do you think deterred the Japanese high command other than armed US citizens? On the other side of the coin, one of Trumans main reasons for dropping the H-Bomb instead of following through with the land invasion of Japan is because the Japanese civilians were armed at the time and he knew that countless American llives would be lost. My Father was on Guam in August of 1945 when Admiral Nimitz ordered all military personnel to write their Mothers, Wives and Sweethearts and say good-bye in preparation for the land invasion, thats how serious our side took an armed populace.
