If I want to strengthen up a corner on a picture frame or any 45/45 degree moulding I usually pin it with a small lost head nail. My tip to prevent splitting is to use the same type of nail in the cordless drill to drill a pilot hole, that way you only have to drive the nail the distance it was held in the chuck, which is enough to hold the joint.....
