If you are replacing the drive with the same old style bendix drive that was original, you use one washer on commutator end and three washers on drive end. The thing is though, the three washers, one is smaller inside diameter and it is the one that controls end play and the other two slip up beyond the shoulder on armature shaft and their purpose is to limit movement of bendix when it is engaged. If you have the newer style drive that does not use a spring you only use the two smaller inside diameter washers, one on each end and throw the other two away.
