Starter binding

I managed to grind up the starter drive on my Farmall H. I bought a new drive and bolted it in and now it will not turn when the 2 bolts are tightened down. If I loosen the 2 bolts , then it will work fine. What did I screw up? I talked to a friend before I did this and he said just bolt it in since there are no shims to worry about.

I don't know that I've ever had one apart that didn't have shim washers ahead of the bendix. Sounds like one needs to come out. Check it again.

There should be 3 driver end space washers that fit in front of the gear drive assembly to keep it from pushing forward too far.

Something is binding somewhere. Maybe that drive that you bought is not exactly the same length as the old one? Maybe for another model? Or a "will fit" part that doesn't quite fit?

Time for some real close examination. Look for a spot on the part where it might have a mark from binding.

You might have to do a "field adjustment" to the part by removing a washer, or filing/grinding down a part thicker/longer than original. Or all of the above.

Is the new Bendix the same length as the old one. Ive replaced many over the yrs without any problems. Your new one must be longer than the old one.

It has 3 spacers, however there is room for another one in there also. Maybe the bushings moved or are not square?

If you are replacing the drive with the same old style bendix drive that was original, you use one washer on commutator end and three washers on drive end. The thing is though, the three washers, one is smaller inside diameter and it is the one that controls end play and the other two slip up beyond the shoulder on armature shaft and their purpose is to limit movement of bendix when it is engaged. If you have the newer style drive that does not use a spring you only use the two smaller inside diameter washers, one on each end and throw the other two away.

OK thanks. Everything is the old style with the 1 washer on the commutater end and 3 on the bendix end. It is just when I tighten it up the last 1/16" or so that it binds up. Gonna have to look at it tomorrow again.
