I would maybe think about Kentucky. Moderate climate, a right-wing state too, for the most part. A gun confiscation would be super stupid, and your governor knows it. How would it be enforced? I remember Diane Feinstein making a comment many years ago that she wanted to get a bill put in place for ALL the guns in America to be turned in.
