Thanks for the thoughtful response and the statistics. The one thing that I wonder about though is this: Texas had some 1200 or so murders in 2010. They executed considerably fewer than that. I wonder if execution would actually be a deterent if it were more certainly associated with the crime.
It never has made much sense to me to keep prisoners on death row for many, many years before finally fulfilling the sentence.
One thing is certain, the rate of recidivism is very low among those who have actually been executed.
