We considered having each of us claim a different residency. Problem is - if one of us died the other would not have automatic ownership (I think). It gets complicated.
If I wanted to get residency in Michigan, I'd have get a Michigan driver's license, and do a few other things. I also think the properties here in NY and in Michigan would have to be in just one person's name. I can't claim residency for a property in Michigan that is jointly owned if my wife (part of that joint) is claiming residency in New York.
There may be a work-around but I'm not aware of it yet.
