Clothes dryers are no different than a stove or any other device with two live lines, neutral current and a ground. Only being ignorant and cheap is keeping the ground and neutral separate at the dryer or stove. There is no excuse. The common point at the first breaker/fuse panel is the only place where there should be a neutral to earth bond. That is only to hold the neutral to earth potential, not to carry current through the ground system. There should not be any other common point between the neutral and ground anywhere. Unfortunately we still have overhead services with just two live lines and the neutral. They are trouble makers that shock livestock.
