Basically, it's a replacement of the big toe joint and then some "other things" for realignment. I meet with her next week for more of the details and find out what time of day I'm supposed to be there for surgery.
She did mention the "shortening" process that you described.
Unfortunately, it's my right foot so there won't be any driving for awhile and the family will have to don their chauffeur caps.
What I'm picking up from you and others who have had foot surgery is that the total recovery time is really longer than the "4-6 weeks" thing the surgeon casually throws at you. Told my wife no need to buy any new shoes until long after it's over.
