OT Foot Surgery Went Well

Well some of you have asked the last 9 weeks how my foot is doing since I had surgery on Sept 26th. Here are a few pictures and I hope they don't upset any one. I'm doing much better, Thanksgiving was a special day for me, I was able to slip my tennis shoe on over my foot and wear it. Since then I've been wearing my soft work boot. Right now after I put my shoes on it's like learning to walk all over again for the first two hours. Then I still limp. I go back to the doctor next Tuesday and hopefully back to work on Dec 9th.

Do you have a pic before the op? Wondered if it looked like mine, big toe crosses under the next two. I have a good foot doc. He doesn't recommend operating and I'm diabetic so I get free custom made shoes.

What specifically did you have done? I'm having foot surgery on Dec. 14 to replace the big toe joint, among "other things." She (the surgeon) is going to explain the "other things when I meet with her next week.

The very first picture is a before picture, two days before I was operated on. If you have a hammer toe I would highly recommend a second opinion.

I couldn't find shoes that fit me any more. Others I have talked to say the same thing that have had foot surgery also.
I had a bunion by my big toe this pushed my foot over toward the little toe causing it to twist and grow on its side, then I had a spur at the side of my little toe. The long bone behind my big toe was growing outward (toward the other foot) so he cut a wedge in it at the end nearest the ankle then screwed it in place when they do that procedure the long bone behind the second toe needs to be shortened otherwise it's prone to fracture. Right now I can walk good, my big toe doesn't touch the floor when walking in the house bare foot but doc said this would be, steps are a little slow right now but I'm cautious. Everyone told me do exactly what the doctor says and you'll be fine. So I'll pass that little bit of advice on. Good luck with your surgery. What is it you're having done?

Thanks for the info.

Basically, it's a replacement of the big toe joint and then some "other things" for realignment. I meet with her next week for more of the details and find out what time of day I'm supposed to be there for surgery.

She did mention the "shortening" process that you described.

Unfortunately, it's my right foot so there won't be any driving for awhile and the family will have to don their chauffeur caps.

What I'm picking up from you and others who have had foot surgery is that the total recovery time is really longer than the "4-6 weeks" thing the surgeon casually throws at you. Told my wife no need to buy any new shoes until long after it's over.

Thanks for the feedback and I'll get back as soon as I can after I "wake up" and get to the computer.

Time certainly has passed since the last photos, looks so much better now. It will be a year in January since I had a similar surgery, for a different reason though. It seemed to resolve most if not all problems, still gets sore, but the doctor says arthritis, seems at the base of the mass he removed, there a small hard bump, seems to have gone well otherwise. One sure can appreciate the results, feeling better and not having the discomfort prior to the surgery. This a walk in the park compared to what that kid is going to have to deal with, in the more recent post resulting from a forklift accident, sure as heck hope he can recover from that.
