Driving around today, got to thinking about my Uncle Sam. Was born in 1938, worked on the same 80 acres his whole life. When he was young, the house was four rooms and his father had to walk a half mile with pails to fill the water barrel in the house. There was a wood stove and a large kerosene lamp for light. A small kerosene lamp was used as a nightlite. In the 1940s they would conserve enough fuel so they could use the Mccormick tractor to plow and disk the garden.
When he grew up he grew tobacco and corn.
Complying with regulations ran him into bankruptcy. He spent the last few years growing vegetables thru a co op for restarants. They sent his sister a card saying he would be sorely missed because of his excellent work.
I need to go back by there and pick thru what is left. A neighbor who is a cousin picked up the two tractors with the hope of repairing them. He grows and combines soybeans - and did a good job restoring his fathers M.
