I put my Son in to a youth model Remington 700 in 7.08 with a 2.5x8 Luepold scope. When he out grew that stock I simply replaced it with a full size fiberglass stock. That rig will last him for the rest of his hunting career. That caliber will knock down most any of the game we hunt here in TX. Recoil is manageable and with Winchester ballistic silver tips it will shoot MOA regularly.
A free floating barrel is a good thing. Most of the guys I hunt with have not been real happy with Savage.
Pick a name brand, Remington, Ruger, Winchester, or Browning.
.243 is fine, a lot of game has been taken with it. I think you'll find the 7.08 has a heavier bullet and hits a little harder without too much recoil. I've seen some hogs soak up a .243 slug and run off. Our deer here are small so the .243 hits them hard.
