Re belt slipping, normally on a long belt you would run with a crossed belt but in your case the saw would be turning wrong direction with crossed belt. You require a stick of belt dressing to add traction to the belt. The joint in your belt is called "Alligator Belt Lacing" and can be purchased in various sizes.
