In Wayne Broehl's book about Deere it is stated that Deere experimented with Rotary technology as early as the late 1950's. A experimental machine was built off a model 55 frame. The concept got shelved because money was needed to finish the New Generation Tractors. Deere was going to revisit the rotary design about 1980 but the farm economy tanked so the ground was laid for the 9000 series walker machines. As far as borrowing or stealing goes all the manufacturers do that. Nobody placed any value on a power shift hi-lo till IH did it then within a few years the others were scrambling to put their own version on the market.
