I've always said that property taxes should be a straight percentage of your income. That would stop a lot of foolishness on the part of our local officials. If the economy tanks, they just keep on spending, but if it were based on a percentage of our income, they'd have to tighten their belts too. The system that we have now is left over from when they traded a live chicken for a box of salt. Nobody had any available cash then, so they looked at your property to see how "prosperous" you were, and taxed you according to someone's whim.
In your case Jiles, check to see if you have any exemptions that you aren't taking advantage of. There might be something available that you aren't aware of.
