You're right Paul - that would hurt me bad. I was actually referring to property taxes only. Some people work hard all their lives, scrimp and save to buy the material to build their own homes, then struggle to pay the taxes on said home when they retire. If the property taxes were based solely on your income, you'd never be forced out of a home at retirement.
I look at real estate taxes on a "per day" basis. Mine are minimal, but I have a friend who paid $10/day 10 years ago. They go up every time a bird flies by. I haven't asked him about his taxes in years - the sky gets dark when the subject comes up in his presence. Another guy was paying around $15/day in 1995. Again - I don't bring up the subject with him either - doubt if they went down. Some areas of the country - these numbers would be welcome, but around "here" I can't agree.
