I found a lot of gear oil dripping out of my GM axles. Brakes are soaked and ruined. It's a 14 bolt semi-floating 9.5" unit. So, I yanked the axle out and found the area where seal rides is all pitted. So, I figured I'd buy a repair seal kit that uses a new press-on wear surface. No good. No such thing available for this axle. I'm pretty surprised. What IS available is a special new bearing with an integral seal that sticks out 1/4" further to ride on a new part of the axle. Also NO good. The axle is pitted there also - but fine on the bearing surface.
All I can say it I'm glad Rock Auto is around. Local NAPA wants almost $400 for a new axle. Rock Auto has it for $105.
Anybody know of good fix for this problem besides axle replacement?

In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
