First diesel powered vehicle I ever rode on was a county snowplow driven by my uncle along with his trusty wingman. Big FWD single wheel on each corner dump with chains and V plow with wings both sides. Winter of 1939-40. Got a ride from our place to my grandmother"s house about 3 miles away plowing big drifts all the way. I"ll never forget it. Little blower fans mounted on the dash to help keep the windows clear. The county had FWD trucks. They got a big discount because they were made here. One Oshkosh truck but that was the wrecker that hauled in the sick and broken FWD trucks. They also had Cat D12 graders from the start because all the town and county roads were gravel and they were used for plowing snow in the winter. First diesel farm tractor I ever saw was a Farmall M, about 1948, plowing heavy land. First diesel farm tractor I ever drove was a new Super MDTA in fall of 1954 pulling a 5 bottom trailer plow in corn stubble. I loved that TA. First diesel engined tractor purchased in our neighborhood was an Oliver Super 88 in 1955. No stationary diesels around us. Sawmill was powered by a Rumley Oil Pull that sat in a shed hardly bigger than the tractor with the belt coming out of a door on the front of the shed. Stack going out through a chimney in the roof. Diesel farm tractors showed up in force in the 60s. Almost everyone had one by the late 60s. Around us, the Ford 5000 was the most popular.
