While I strongly dislike the idea of having to kill another human being, the legal system has taken away the option to shoot in defense of one's life or property and merely wound an intruder.
There are real cases where a criminal was shot, wounded, then successfully sued the person who shot them even though that person was shot while committing a criminal act.
