if it's for home protection, the most important attributes are length and weight.
You want something very short and very light that you can swing around quickly in tight spaces with an attacker coming at you.
Stopping power really doesn't matter if it handles like an 8 foot long 2x4. (Not sure of your family situation, but remember too that it may not be you that needs to use it. Could be a wife or child holding it)
If you narrow it down to two choice that are similar in handling, then by all means go for the 12 guage.
