The big time arcing sounds like hooking up charger backwards. + is always + and - is always - regardless of where they go,to frame or to starter. Some folks get mixed up thinking neg is always frame but not true if batt is hooked up pos ground. If starter is direct shorted or something there would be big arcing when you hooked up battery. You don't need the gen or alt to get it to run but you do need power to coil.
