I would think that he could patch it himself with a tube patch kit. However, the spot must be clean while the patch sets up, so it might be tough to get a good repair with the stuff coming out of the hole. Make sure that he checks the inside of the tire for thorns/nails. I had a front tire on and off with a slow leak about 6 times, and patched 6 pinholes, before I found the thorn.
