We had a polled Shorthorn cow that I spoiled from birth. She was pleased to let anyone touch her newborn calf - but wouldn't let a dog near the calf. She was born and died of old age on the farm and she always had a heifer calf.
She was also the herd boss and kept the other cattle in line, which made life a bit easier for us.
