A reading of this thread reveals one sad, central truth: even though the constitution acknowledges (not gives) our RIGHT to own and carry, "reasonable" limitations continue to be imposed through the years, each successive one opening the way for more, newer "reasonable" limitations that will ultimately erode that original right into meaningless.
Sure, it's "reasonable" to assume the average citizen has no legitimate need to own a full-auto weapon, or a mortar, or a bazooka or a stinger missle. I essentially agree, but it's the ongoing extension of such arguments that gets us to the place where it limits who can carry what, when and where. It also becomes "reasonable" to limit caliber, powder charge, projectile weight and composition, number of chamberable rounds, etc., chipping away until finally, like JRSutton, you get tired of the hassle and give up.
That's not an accidental outcome. That's the plan. I used to be irritated when the NRA so strongly defended what appeared to be "extreme" positions, such as the "cop-killing ammo". Now I know that they were simply acting on the correct belief that to surrender any ground will eventually lead to full defeat. Chip. Chip. Chip.
