I'm 61 and been farming all my life. Use the Roundup or Gramoxone this fall and kill everything. Plow it deep and then smooth it over preferably with a field cultivator and then leave it until spring. The winter rains and snow will have the soil so mellow by spring that you will only have to put on a burn down and pre-emerge and plant it. This is if you plan on planting it flat. If you plan on rowing it up; do it in the fall; knock the tops out of the rows in the spring and plant. This way you are assured you will have moisture to plant. If you have any weeds in the spring you can re-hip and then knock them down to plant. You have more options this way and you can water it if you can.
