If it's draining the battery when it's not running your (reverse current relay) or better known as the cutout relay points in the regulator are stuck closed. They may not be fried. Yes I would definately try to repolarize it before replacing it again since it may not be bad. When all said and done polarizing and with the engine running use a wire and ground out the "F" terminal on the Generator and it should show full charge. This will show if the generator is good or bad as long as all the other connections are known to be good including the generator ground to engine thru all the mounting bolts and brackets.
