Farmall Super C charging problem

My dad has a Farmall Super C that has the 6 volt system still. He went out and bought a new batt. for it. He went to polarize the regulator and didn't know what he was doing and just started touching terminals together. Now if the tractor is sitting it drains the battery and it won't charge when it's running. I told him he might have ruined the regulator and that is the resultof the charging issue. I suggested buying a new regulator first before converting it over sinece he just bought the battery. What do you think?

Brett remove the cover on the regulator and see if the points are opening and closing. They might be fried. The two terminals to touch to polarize are the gen and bat.

What do you mean by converting it over?

If it's draining the battery when it's not running your (reverse current relay) or better known as the cutout relay points in the regulator are stuck closed. They may not be fried. Yes I would definately try to repolarize it before replacing it again since it may not be bad. When all said and done polarizing and with the engine running use a wire and ground out the "F" terminal on the Generator and it should show full charge. This will show if the generator is good or bad as long as all the other connections are known to be good including the generator ground to engine thru all the mounting bolts and brackets.
