gophers dont go real deep.you must have good subsoil moisture left. Going without rain isnt what gets you most of the time, its when the subsoil moisture gets really low that youve got a real problem. I had a grass fire at my place in western okla over the weekend started by a train. discing/plowing firebreaks i found the moisture there was way low in most places down 6-7 " deep. Went over where i had some standing oat/wheat/rygrass mix i was going to disc down, and moisture there was still pretty good where the ground had been more shaded.ground cover sure makes a difference. Really late to be planting them ,but Im going to try drilling in some sunflowers on the places where i cut a firebreak.if they grow I'll leave them for the birds this winter and re-sow grass next spring early right in the stalks.
