Ground Moisture

Walking my corn patch, I spotted two gopher? push-ups. To my amazement, when I squeezed a handful of soil it held together. I would term the ground sandy loam. We haven't had a good rain all month. I don't know how far down they brought the dirt from, but I'm sure glad my TO-30 turned a lot of vegetation under before planting.

gophers dont go real deep.you must have good subsoil moisture left. Going without rain isnt what gets you most of the time, its when the subsoil moisture gets really low that youve got a real problem. I had a grass fire at my place in western okla over the weekend started by a train. discing/plowing firebreaks i found the moisture there was way low in most places down 6-7 " deep. Went over where i had some standing oat/wheat/rygrass mix i was going to disc down,and moisture there was still pretty good where the ground had been more shaded.ground cover sure makes a difference. Really late to be planting them ,but Im going to try drilling in some sunflowers on the places where i cut a firebreak.if they grow I'll leave them for the birds this winter and re-sow grass next spring early right in the stalks.

Jackinok;

Where do you live? We hunted quail around Beaver and Guymon. I have a friend who lives in Claremore--he was my guide--and attended a dog-training seminar in Big cabin a couple of times.

we moved from the farm a few years ago because of my wifes health,so we could be closer to good hospitals,and we live in blanchard now just south of okc. But we still have the farm just south of I-40 between elk city and sayre. we have a 80 and a 160 here I still mess with. But the "farm" is still out west. I used to pheasant hunt all around guymon and beaver. But we quail hunted mostly around cheyenne and reydon. I havent even hunted for quail in a few years,till we went on a hunt down by tipton last winter. Have you seen any prairie chickens around while youve been hunting?I was aproached by the wildlife dept about getting in on their prairie chicken initiative thing they have got started,but I havent really decided if I want to mess with it.

Weather man on KOLR 10 yesterday said it was dry down to around 5 foot. I do not know if it is that dry but here in Missouri it is very dry and with the 4th of July close I hope we get rain before some one sets off some fireworks in the wrong place and we have fires like they are having out west

I had the pleasure of dig'n up a water line last week and found that the first 18" was like concret. Zero moisture, clay/sand mix, "ROCK" freakin hard. After 18" it loosened up where I could get a shovel in it, but it did not stay together. Fell apart like digging in sand. I only went 4 1/2 feet so what was below that I do not know. I do know the first 18" took almost 2 hours to get through (chisel some, remove, chisel some, remove....).
