Gene, it's a very common mistake. Spurge and Purslane look very much identical except for Purslane's meaty stems and thick leaves. I've heard that people are sometimes poisoned because they eat what they think is Purslane (which is a Spinach-like vegetable), but it's actually Spurge which is a very poisonous weed that likes to grow in the same places.
