David, I do quite a few 44's and specials and stuff. Use Victor gaskets and have always installed the head gasket dry, they will seep some as you heat the engine up to temp. always re-torque the gasket and re-set the tappets. After heating up the engine the head bolts will take an eight to a quarter of a turn to bring them back to proper torque, after that they have always sealed for me. I don't know about old tractor gaskets, but automotive head gaskets have a teflon or similar coating and do not want any sealer on them, they want them to slip and slide when they heat and cool so they don't scrub out.
