Opinion on Head Gasket

The replacement head gasket for the MH44 is composite with Aluminum rings for compression on the cylinders. It is a real hard composite, not the mushy type. The block and head have been surfaced, the sleeves are new and have had the top surface height set.

I am thinking about putting it on dry.

I usually just hang the gasket up with a wire hook. The just spray the whole gasket. I usually apply several coats with a 5-10 minute wait between coats. I have done it so much there is a spot on my engine hoist that is copper color. LOL It is a handy spot to hang things on.

Just as JD said and it works well or you can spray the top of the block then set the gasket on then spray the gasket. What little you get in the cylinders and on the pistons etc will not hurt a thing

That's the way I do it. I use spray on Coppercoat on any head gasket I install, even if directions say they can be installed dry.

It certainly can't hurt anything, and might save a bunch of grief.

I"ve used lots of different sealers. And have settled on aluminum paint for the last several years. A couple of heavy wet coats, let "em flash dry then a third and install wet.

Or, on small engines, dip it in a gallon can of paint a couple of times.

Check the packaging or gasket makers web site. Many times, instructions for what if anything to use on the gasket are in the instructions.

Sure has changed. Forty years ago when I was first exposed to coppercoat, I was unimpressed. It was in a can that if you didn't vigorously stir it up, all you got was slimy goo on the dabber. One of the guys in the shop was using it on everything. Being kind of the "road" man I was sent to figure out why a tractor was blowing the radiator hoses off!
It was a demonstrator tractor which had been in the shop for a little work. The guy using it fiddled with it and was stumped. After I cleaned all the goo off the radiator neck, it was fixed!

Bob I too never liked the copper coat in a can with a dabber. I like the spray can type much better. I don't use it anywhere else other than head gaskets. It would seem that your guy was trying to use it in place of other sealants.

depends on the gst, but a lot of gsks. have the sealer built right into them. so dry is ok cause when the engine warms up the sealer does its job. i have done both ways. never have used nothing but pematex hi-tac spray on them and can say i have never had head gskt. leakage in over thirty five yrs. of using it. also go into any garage and i dont believe their choice is paint or copper coat.when things are in spec you dont need extra goop on the gskt. since your's are resurfaced i would not be afraid of dry install but dsepends on the gsk.

David as I have posted to you since you started your 44 engine. I built many of the 44 s for tractor pullers shaved heads, high compression engines and as Old has it always hung the gasket light coat of copper coat on each side and tightend it down. To my knoledge never had a failure..Dry might work but sure like that copper coat.

I ended up putting a abundant coat of copper on it and installing. I also remembered the copper that had to be applied with a brush, that is what turned me off to it. I got the spray copper, it went on easily.

I appreciate all the advise on this.

I took the motor apart six years ago, so it has been a memory exercise in putting it back together.

David, I do quite a few 44's and specials and stuff. Use Victor gaskets and have always installed the head gasket dry, they will seep some as you heat the engine up to temp. always re-torque the gasket and re-set the tappets. After heating up the engine the head bolts will take an eight to a quarter of a turn to bring them back to proper torque, after that they have always sealed for me. I don't know about old tractor gaskets, but automotive head gaskets have a teflon or similar coating and do not want any sealer on them, they want them to slip and slide when they heat and cool so they don't scrub out.

Mike,

I do not know the brand of gasket, it came with Tisco kif. I could use your expertise, as I am trying to remember how it goes back together. I have done a lot of things wrong, but have figured it out and corrected. That is what happens when the motor sits for years dissasmbled.

I have used that 99ma permatex with good results too. I even used the old gasket on an F12 & it is still sealed.
