On our helicopters, each gearbox has at least one magnetic chip detector and a caution annunciator light. Engines and transmissions have two or more detectors. Whenever we have a chip caution light we have set criteria for oil samples, oil and filter changes, penalty ground runs, etc. before the aircraft is released. Sometimes it's debris from a new gearbox or a recent overhaul (which is normal) and sometimes an impending bearing or gear failure warning. At any rate, we have set procedures to follow to prevent $$$$$ damage or worse. With the cost of new tractors and combines, it's hard to beleive they don't have magnetic chip detectors in the engines, transmissions and gearboxes. Cheap insurance!
