Anybody heard of J. Z. Knight, the lady who made a career out of "channeling" the teachings of Ramtha, a warrior who lived 35,000 years ago? Its one of the longest running, most successful scams I know of. Among her adherants is Linda Evans, of "Big Valley" (The highly delicious Audra Barkley) and "Dynasty" or "Dallas" (can't recall which). Google J Z Knight- its pretty interesting.
Anyhow, my dad did a lot of the finish work on her barn. The fact that you employ a finish carpenter on a barn tells a lot- it is even flashier than the one shown. I tried to find a picture of it on the net to post, but was not successful- she has a fence around her place that probably cost much more than my farm, and is pretty jealous of her privacy. Dad said she often came out and talked with him- "Nice gal", said he- "and obviously pretty talented, to pull this off."
Part of her talent was not trying to recruit followers unless they had first shown an interest- evidenced by the fact that she never got anywhere near the Ramtha thing while talking to dad or the other workers. It was as if she knew they all thought it was BS, and didn't want to create a situation where they would quit or she would have to fire them. Nobody wanted to rock the boat, and it worked out fine.
