The thing is the road contractor has to pay the police department for the time the cop was on the site. Unless a local cop feels like writing some tickets they will stay away until an arangment is made for the time. All those cops you see standing around road work are being paid by the contractor. If they eliminate the cop[ some towns it is madatory to hire them ] they free up job money and make more profit. Often instead of a police presence they use an attenuator truck or crash truck . Next time you go by roadwork look at the first truck parked . It is a giant black and yellow cushion to let people crash into and protect the workers. On large highway projects so many deaths are figured into the job.
