Yep, we had the bridge thing quite a few years ago. Up at the main highway, the sign said, "Bridge out - road closed to through traffic".
Funniest thing is that the neighbors south of us have a driveway at least a half mile long - it runs east, then curves south into their yard at the far end. Nice wide driveway, looks like a road. So people would come down the road - see that the bridge was "really" out... do a U turn. Then reach the neighbors driveway, turn east and go flying up their driveway doing about 50 mph - then slam the brakes when they reached the surprise sharp curve at the end. Just funny.
We too wished we had a dollar for every car that did that - there were a lot! We could have gone out for a really nice dinner on that money.
