I don't know about thanking him, but I would definitly thank the good Lord, that sounds like it couldn't have turned out any better for you. I fell into a similar deal this winter, clean up the edges of the fields and its mine to farm for 5yrs. And as a added bonus I finally had a good reason to buy a bulldozer! Land owner was impressed with the clean up job and is already talking about another 5. So treat him extra good and you might have a long term deal on the cheap.
