If you are contemplating any residential wind turbine, FIRST buy a weather station that will tell you (average wind speed) not just gusts. Here in NY we also can google in our address and it will tell you your average wind speed. You can also go to the Skystream website and enter your address and answer some questions on your electric cost and consumption and you will get a report, based on therotical info. Buildings and trees adjacent to a turbine will affect performance considerably. I much prefer the Skystream HAWT to the Mariah VAWT. The Skystream will make 10 times the power in the same location. The Mariah has to turn at 200RPM to "kick in" and maintain at least 142RPM to stay engaged. At 428RPM it will also apply a brake, and then a 600sec. countdown ocurs and then the brake is released. The Skystreams also apply a brake in heavy wind, but governs the speed, not shut them down.
