There is no way I'd buy anything off Craigslist unless I picked it up and paid for it in person. If you're really serious about doing this, send the guy a deposit via Paypal. Make an informal agreement that he'll hold the vehicle for X days in exchange for your deposit, and he gets to keep the deposit if you back out for any reason. Then pick it up in person, cash in hand, seller to have clear title in hand at time of sale. No tickee, no washee.

Now, if you want to do it some other way, it's your money. Just don't risk any more than you can afford to lose.
