O/T - Concerns with CraigsList and Auto Transport

Fears come up thinking of sending money to someone four or five states away. Have to assume I guess that the guy will come up with a title and has the car. Any bad experiences? Also, what are chances auto transport won"t come up phantom charges before they will release the car to me?

You better go there and see, feel and smell it yourself. Then watch it being loaded. You are asking for trouble otherwise. Now I guess if you can afford being taken.....go for it.

CL is not Ebay, you are to deal local so you can see and touch what you are buying. I buy a lot of big stuff on CL but I want to see it. If the price is too good and they start dropping the price before you ask,and say send money Western Union, RUN AWAY FAST.

On cl, in my area (mid atlantic), they say all offers to ship cars across state lines, are fraudulent. If you need it that bad, you are an easy mark!!!

I didn't sleep for a few nights when I bought one off the side of the road one county away back in the early 70s. The guy needed me to write him the check so he could go to the bank and pay it off to get a clear title. I had this guys name, knew where he lived and knew the bank that had the lein. I can't even imagine why anybody would take such a chance as buying one that far away.

Have you talked to this man on the phone? Have you run a phone number reverse on Google. Tell him you need name number, Driver's license number in order to write a check DO NOT send MO or CC. or Postal MO. Personal check only.
Ask him for one more new photo with a time date code on it.
Tell hinm you have BIL that live close by and he is coming over to look at it and ask for directions how to get. there. If any one of these items fails then walk!

I am in KY and and went to atlanta to look at and buy a '69 chevy 4x4. Paid guy, got title, filled out serious bill-of-sale stating he agreed to hold truck and put in on shipping trailer. No problems with shipping company at all. Was only like $385 and they ended up picking it up that night and I had it the next day.

I would be very nervous however about just sending money to another state, don't think I could do it. that is why I drove to atlanta to see and drive the truck and meet the guy...good luck

I have been looking for a certain body style/color combination. I shop Craigs List as well as others. After several phone conversations and e-mails for an electronic record of what has been agreed upon or condition, I have driven up to 4 hours each way to look in person. Over the past 14 months, I have seen a lot of scenery, and I am still looking.

If the car you are interested in is too far to see in person, try to find a certified appraiser that is close and can give a good inspection for a fair price. Never trust phone descriptions or e-mailed pictures.

See what the first guy crochety said . If you are okay with losing that amount of money go ahead . If it is not okay losing that amount of money by taking a chance on a complete strangers honesty then absolutly don't send an unknown party the money. You won't need transport anyway if this person takes off with your money. Never assume.

If it is available local, I think your better off. I have bought 1 tractor, and 3 trucks unseen from the internet, because what I wanted was not available locally. I talked to the seller on the phone, looked at pictures, asked for more pictures if needed, made sure the seller knew I was far away and would need them to keep the vehicle while I was arranging shipping, and then made the deal over the phone.

There is no way I'd buy anything off Craigslist unless I picked it up and paid for it in person. If you're really serious about doing this, send the guy a deposit via Paypal. Make an informal agreement that he'll hold the vehicle for X days in exchange for your deposit, and he gets to keep the deposit if you back out for any reason. Then pick it up in person, cash in hand, seller to have clear title in hand at time of sale. No tickee, no washee.

Now, if you want to do it some other way, it's your money. Just don't risk any more than you can afford to lose.

I bought a tractor sight unseen from a Guy in Texas, but the tractor was in Michigan. He hired a truck to deliver it and it arrived at 1:00 in the morning a couple of days later. I gave the trucker the check and that was the end of it. The tractor was like he had said on the phone. Some times you just have to go with your gut.

I'd have to want it pretty desperately before I'd conduct any business on craigslist without meeting in person.

in god we trust, that what is says on a dollar bill,,,all others pay cash,,, and that means when you see it in front of you to pay,,,read some threads in transportation section about scammers wanting money in advance and then, you never see/hear from them...as stated, could take a trip to look and see, before giving out bye-bye money...my $.02

You gotta do what feels right to you... If you have a bad feeling, don't do it..... Just use common sense... Asking that question here is gonna bring mostly "run away" advice cause folks enjoy the "I told ya so" much more when something negative happens....
I obviously can't use craigslist (guess I could tho), but buy stuff all the time with ebay and now thru facebook and got stuck once on a 15 buck hat........

Not many normal every day folks sell'n stuff on craigslist offer transport service on a car or truck. If they claim to be a dealer or any type of buisness call the local police in the area and just ask what kind of folks they are.

Buddy of mine works up the road from where I do and stops in to see me some nights. He showed up about a month ago on cloud nine. Found a back hoe online just out side Atlanta for next to nothing, I had a tractorhouse there at work and flipped through and found three just like it for over twice what was in the add. Had the internet add printed out and showed it to me. Normal Nigerian wording in the add. He was head'n out the next morning to go look at it. They had give'n him the name of the "shipping company" that was holding it. He had not googled the compay. I talked him into calling the local police before leave'n out. They wanted any and all info he had on the "sellers" because they had been use'n a made up name and company to sell stuff for a while.
