I have a JD 175 with a 14 hp Kawasaki. Two separate times I have had similar sounding problems to what you have now. Both times I had spark and fuel to the carb but it would not start. The best it would do was pop and backfire every so often. Both times my problem was the ignition coil. I had spark but it was too weak to fire. Both times after replacing the ignition coil it ran fine.
