JD lawn mower with Kaw motor

I have a JD LX280 with an 18HP Kawasaki motor. It won't start, has fuel to carb, spark but no run. I expect the fuel shutoff solenoid is not working.

Does anyone know if I have to pull the carb to get it out? How does it come off?

Remove the spark plug and check for compression. At least some had a plastic cam gear that sometimes failed.
 
i have seen those fuel shutoff solenoids have juice and you can feel them click when you turn the key on and off and still wont run. They dont uncover the main jet enough sometimes to let it suck fuel through it.
 
It just screws out of the bottom of the carburetor. It holds the bowl on so turn the gas off if it has a shut off or Vise grip the soft line back by the filter.

Before you take anything apart spray some starting fluid in the carburetor and see if it starts. The solenoid get accused of failing when many times the carburetor just needs cleaned.
 
I have a JD 175 with a 14 hp Kawasaki. Two separate times I have had similar sounding problems to what you have now. Both times I had spark and fuel to the carb but it would not start. The best it would do was pop and backfire every so often. Both times my problem was the ignition coil. I had spark but it was too weak to fire. Both times after replacing the ignition coil it ran fine.

As Slim pointed out it could be the coil(s). Probably the only weak point of the entire engine are those little bitty coils.
My LX188 uses the same system and a coil will fail if the plug either fouls and shorts. Or if the gap wears too wide and the coil arc through from high voltage.
Worn points will cause a miss fire.
Operating a part throttle and part load will also make the single barrel carbed engine run one cylinder richer than the other.
Sometimes the pcv system will draw oil to the intake manifold and foul a plug.
