if you have 4' or shorter fixtures with the old T12's, 40 watt down to 34 watt econimizers,(big tube, with two pins on each end) then go ahead and change the ballast and lamps out to T8's (smaller tube, 34 watt or less, two pins on the ends) you can use the same light fixture, and lamp ends MAKE SURE you follow the wiring diagram on the ballast as instant start and rapid start wire differently take your time on the first one and it will turn out to be very simple now if we are talking about 8' fixtures then you need to change the fixture out or get a kit to convert to 4' T8's T 5's are out there and supposed to be even more effient however have no expierence with them supposed to be less than one year payback in energy savings to convert fixtures over to T8's from T12's even replacing lo and high bay metal halide, etc with T8's claiming less than one year pay back Ron
