Freon is a trade name beloning to DuPont. The word is used in general for all brands AND types. R-12 (auto) was replaced years ago, now R-22 (Home) is/has been phased out. Those are just 2 #'s. There are many differant "Freon's", plus blends, all numbered by class. There is CFC, HFC, HCFC, zerotropic, nearazeotropic, azeotropic, +++, all used to define "Freon". Ammonia is considered a refrigerant, with it's own number, as Propane. As far as learning how to fill Ammonia, well?? If you know refrigeration and how it works and the dangers, ok. Ammonia is as bad if not worse than some others. Ever get awhiff while cleaning somthing? Can't breathe, kind of vapor locks is a fair description. The simplest example of refrigeration most are familiar with is your shop air compressor. Compress it gets hot, expand (out the tool), it cools, not real efficient though.
